Nikkor Z 20MM F/1.8 S
Is this wide aperture prime a further string in Nikon’s mirrorless bow?
BUILD AND HANDLING
Nikon’s Z system can be rather confusing. A number of its lenses are inexplicably large, and while it can be argued that small dimensions are not a critical feature of mirrorless optics, most manufacturers make the effort. Thankfully the Nikkor Z 20mm f/1.8 S is a truly lightweight option and is ideally balanced on a Nikon Z6 or Z7 range camera. The barrel does feel a little plasticky, suggesting this is an enthusiast-level optic, but the extra wide focus ring is lovely to operate, allowing smooth focusing for stills or video. It’s also uncomplicated with few controls to worry about, creating a relaxed user experience.
PERFORMANCE
The combination of the wide 20mm focal length and wide f/1.8 aperture is very welcome, making this a perfect lens for weddings and reportage photography. The 9-bladed aperture generates very nice bokeh, while allowing handheld photography even in low light. There is little in the way of distortion and vignetting, or at least of the troublesome kind. Magnifying the image reveals lots of fine detail and wider shots demonstrate attractive levels of contrast. Meanwhile autofocus is quick and near-silent.
VERDICT
Quality-wise there is nothing to complain about with this lens – images are punchy but natural and sharpness is lovely. It might not be as exciting as some of Nikon’s other Z lenses but it serves its function well. It’s a little pricey, but is a reliable choice for enthusiasts and professionals alike.
