Nikkor Z 50MM F/2.8 MACRO

Nikon adds a potential must-have optic to its line of Z-series glass

BUILD AND HANDLING

We loved the Nikkor Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S, but our only criticism was the added cost over this 50mm smaller sibling. The Z 50mm f/2.8 Macro is lightweight and its small size means there’s no reason not to take it everywhere you go. The focus ring is manageable, though the extending design is a drawback when set up on a tripod as frequent position adjustment is needed. While not incredibly solid, we have no complaints regarding the user experience.

PERFORMANCE

Once again, Nikon has created a beautifully sharp lens. The glass is able to resolve a lot of detail, while contrast is punchy, yet natural. Colours are also nicely rendered with no visible shifts, which is useful when shooting insect or plant life subjects. Bokeh is lovely too, with creamy, rounded highlights and minimal cat’s eye. Be aware that maximum f/stop varies at different focusing distances, however, admitting significantly less light at macro settings. AF speed is more than enough for most circumstances, but the electronic MF mechanism is slow to work. That makes it great for precision shots, but frustrating in other circumstances.

VERDICT

The Nikkor Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S is unquestionably a high-quality lens. It produces gorgeous-looking images and makes for a brilliant all-rounder optic with a useful macro function. The wider FOV won’t suit everyone and all subjects, of course. At over £600, it is expensive for an f/2.8 standard lens, but this is an optic you can fall in love with over time.

The 50mm focal length means you have to get quite close to smaller subjects to achieve frame-filling images. However, it does offer a unique perspective
