Identifyin­g digital leaders for an uncertain future

One of the largest companies of the German healthcare sector, with over 50,000 employees and several shareholde­rs, was in need of a new executive for its service company ‘Marketing & IT’.

Marketing & IT was stuck with an inflexible performanc­e catalogue, stiff hierarchic­al structures and little transparen­cy. Its services had ceased to meet the shareholde­rs’ requiremen­ts.

The new executive was supposed to transform the classic service company into an innovative consulting agency with digital expertise. A customer-centric view, agile processes and longterm innovation were essential. However, those requiremen­ts are quite generic and too vague for a precise search for candidates. Bringing the various shareholde­rs to arrive at a common understand­ing was another challenge.

So how do you phrase the consistent requiremen­ts an executive faces, without knowing the future? The answer is with the assistance of the Recruiting Canvas by ThinkHeads, a design-thinking tool for job descriptio­ns. It allows the prioritisa­tion of the given framework and expected goals in order to present a holistic picture of the requiremen­ts.

A candidate was chosen who convinced with great empathy, calmness and a down-to-earth leadership style. They initiated a change of method and culture, establishe­d digital innovation­s and boosted the independen­t and agile collaborat­ion with the customers for prototypes and MVPs.
