Iconic singer/songwriter/activist/poet Ani Difranco’s new album Binary is her 20th studio album, can you believe? Written prior to the 2016 US election that gave us President Trump, political lyrics, unsurpringly, form the narrative. From teaching non-violence in Pacifists Lament and empathy in Terrifying Sight, to a shoutout for reproductive rights in Play God, Binary is a sophisticated record, richly produced, orchestral and warm. At times it sounds melancholic, at other times – particularly in the title track – funky as hell. I loved it and will keep playing it. There’s a richness that I don’t think I’ll tire of.
