Keep bird feeders and water sources topped up in winter, and regularly clean feeders and bird tables as they can be a source of disease for avian visitors.

Take down any bird boxes and remove old nesting material, unfertilised eggs and any other debris that may carry diseases.

Late winter into early spring is a good time to put up bird boxes in your garden, locate them two to four meters up a tree, fence or wall, face the box between north and east (avoiding direct sun) and leave the front clear, so birds have direct access.
