Plant of the Month: Asparagus

Dorset - - GARDEN MASTERCLASS -

All male varieties like ‘Guelph Millennium’ have the heftiest spears and yields, but my favourite for flavour is the amethyst-coloured ‘Pacific Purple’. Plant the roots in shallow trenches in weed-free soil spreading the roots out on either side. Add enough soil to cover and as the spears grow fill with more. It’ll be three years until the crowns are big enough to harvest, but they’re worth the wait!

IF YOU DO JUST ONE THING…

Buy fresh compost for seed sowing. Stuff that’s sat in your shed over winter becomes stale and isn’t reliable for freshly sown seeds.
