Derek passes on vital skills

Dumfries & Galloway Standard - - SCHOOL NEWS - Sharon Liptrott

Development chef Derek Lockett from Brakes Scotland visited St Columba’s RC Primary School in Annan and cooked up a storm with the children.

Derek took four groups through safe cooking methods including peeling and chopping vegetables.

The children followed all the instructions and created a delicious vegetable lentil dhal together, which they sampled at the end of each session.

This was a great opportunity to use equipment the school has invested in thanks to funds from the Food for Thought Education Fund which is a three-way partnership between the Scottish Government, Education Scotland and BITC Scotland.

More than 1,120 schools have taken part in the programme and been able to invest in the infrastructure required to deliver food education in schools.

Derek kindly left extra ingredients behind which allowed many children and teachers to replicate the recipe and practice more of what they had just learned during the class.

The school is intending to continue this idea and the staff are planning to run regular cooking sessions with the children to improve their cooking skills and promote heathy eating habits.
