What would you add to Dumfries town centre?

Dumfries & Galloway Standard - - NEWS - Stephen Temlett

If you had the choice, what is the one thing you would add to Dumfries town centre to make it more appealing?

It is a subject which always causes great debate among many people with shops, entertainment and housing usually top of the agenda.

Lee McQueen, 35, from Dumfries, told us: “If I could add something it would be more different live venues.

“I’m not talking about just pubs I mean more live music venues – things like specialist venues. Things like that can rejuvenate a town centre.

“We can’t just bring people into housing in the town centre if there’s nothing there for them.

“We need to bring something a wee bit different in. There was a vinyl records shop on the High Street. It was something a bit different but it didn’t last long. The council could help these places a lot more than they do.”

Peter Smith, 31, from Mouswald, said: “I’d like a microbrewery with a local brewer and they could offer people tasters.

“There are a lot of towns in Scotland that do it but Dumfries is one that doesn’t have it.

“Another thing I’d have to say is a proper good restaurant actually on the High Street.

“There are lots of them just off the main street and down the Vennel and Bank Street but there isn’t actually one on the High Street.”

Recently the council has looked into the prospect of bringing in special markets to try to increase footfall in the town centre. A new nightclub plan hit the buffers recently.

However, for some the situation was more straightforward.

Sheila Richardson, 65, from Dumfries, said: “I would have to say shops; that’s the main thing for me.

“I actually think the town centre has got worse over the years, there’s just less and less on it. More shops would bring more people in.

“I think the decline started with Binns – that was a real shocker. Then it went from there with Woolworths and others.

“There’s not much point in coming up Dumfries High Street.”

Sandra Quinn, 76, also from Dumfries, said: “I think it’s getting better.

“I just want a bit more variety from the shops in Dumfries, to be honest.”
