Annan lose out to Strathendrick
Annan ................ 8 Strathendrick...10
Strathendrick finally broke their duck at the seventh attempt when they narrowly beat Annan for the first time at Violetbank on Saturday.
Annan were probably just the favourites going into this Tennent’s West Division One match, however, the Fintry club had the better form going into game.
The visitors was delayed due to a road accident so the match kicked off 10 minutes late. Strathendrick were also playing in Annan’s away strip as they had left their strip bag behind.
The first half was a low scoring affair with defences on top and it wasn’t until the first half was almost over that Annan finally scored, as prop Ryan Glass barged over for his second try of the season.
The half ended not long after and although Annan were 5-0 up, it was still anyone’s game.
The second half had barely started when captain McCann made it 8-0 to give Annan a little breathing space but Strathendrick scored thanks to a penalty and suddenly it was 8-7 with just over 20 minutes to play.
Annan looked rattled and needed to score next to calm their nerves. Alas it was not to be and at the death Strathendrick clinched the game with a penalty.
Annan need to regroup quickly as they have a tough away trip to East Kilbride on Saturday.
Annan 1st XV squad: Ryan Glass, Kieran Warrick, Thomas Sloan, Neal Coupland, Michael Thompson, Daniel Nordon, Dwayne Barnes, Sean Haren, Harry Houlday, Craig McCann, James Kirby, James Bigham, Alex Halliday, David Wyllie, Andrew Jancey, Replacements: Ryan Hetherington, Adam Torbett, Callum Bell, Daniel Robson. (all used).
Annan 2nd XV match against Strathendrick 2nds was cancelled as Strathendrick 2nds couldn’t raise a team.
Annan are on the road to East Kilbride. The West 1 league is really two divisions in one. The top four teams, Garnock, East Kilbride, Allan Glens and Greenock Wanderers are head and shoulders above the other eight teams in the division.
These eight teams are all fighting to be top dog of the rest. Some of the teams are improving week on week, some are remaining static while some are getting worse. It is going to be interesting to see the state of affairs with four matches to go.
Any of the teams could find themselves fighting relegation especially if Dalziel and Cumnock start to pick up some more wins that some of their recent displays have deserved.
Only four matches are taking place this weekend and only one involves one of the top teams. Alas for Annan it is their match away to in-form East Kilbride.
Annan need to stop the rot and be playing at the standard they are capable of to get something from this match.
Next week Annan are at home to Greenock so it’s a tough couple of weeks for the Annan squad.

The 2nd XV are hopefully on the road to Clydebank in their latest West 2 reserve match.
Clydebank are lying just above Annan in 11th top place so the match could be a great opportunity for them to get some points on the board.
If any players are available, as more always welcome, please contact 2nd XV team manager Gavin Lynch or coach Neil Moffat.
