Medal suc­cess at Swedish cham­pi­onship events

A mar­tial arts team is cel­e­brat­ing after a tremen­dous medal haul in Swe­den.

The World Mar­tial Arts Coun­cil UK squad, which in­cluded mem­bers from Dum­fries and Gal­loway, were com­pet­ing in the Swedish Kick­box­ing and WorldMac Swedish Taek­wondo Cup at the same time last week with both tour­na­ments tak­ing place over four days.

UK came home with seven gold, nine sil­ver and three bronze medals. Six­teen of the 19 stu­dents made it into the fi­nals of the Kick­box­ing Cham­pi­onships where they were up against stu­dents from Swe­den, Switzer­land, Al­ge­ria, Greece and Italy among oth­ers.

It was a sim­i­lar story for the Taek­wondo Cup with each stu­dent com­pet­ing in ei­ther Poom­sae solo, pair or team forms as well as the spar­ring sec­tion of the cham­pi­onships.

Out of 28 com­peti­tors they scored 22 gold medals along with sil­ver and bronze medals as well as win­ning club of the cham­pi­onships.

World Mac pres­i­dent Anne Arm­strong, of Dum­fries, said: “It was an out­stand­ing cham­pi­onships. I’m proud of each and ev­ery kid that com­peted. WorldMac has many tal­ented young stu­dents in it the UK team.

“We all look for­ward to an­other suc­cess­ful 2019 year as we head to Turkey in April and our UK Cham­pi­onships then back to Swe­den in Novem­ber 2019.”
