A selection of surprises for the New Year
In the SouthofScotland League, the first weekendof 2019 threw up a few surprise results although the top teams all claimed another three points each.
Leaders Stranraer recorded a comfortable three goals to nil victory overWigtown and Bladnoch at Trammondford Park to maintain their unbeaten run with all the goals coming in the first 45minuteso f the match.n Seco d p lacedBonnytonThistle beat StCuthbertWanderers by six goals to three at Kilmarnock while LocharThistle saw off the challengeof neighbours HestonRovers by four goals to two.Prolific striker Iain Anderson opened the scoring for the home side on the 35th minute with DevanNicholson making it2-0 three minutes later.Fourminutes after the break Anderson scored his team’s third from the penalty spotandin the 51st minute he found the netagain to complete his hat-trick and recorded his 100th goal for Lochar.
The visitors then started a fightback whenPhilip Middlemiss scored in the 66th minute with Jamie Struthers adding a second with ten minutes left to play to complete the scoring.
UpperAnnandale are enjoyinga very good season andonSaturday they beat bottom placed side Annan Athletic by four goals to one at Moffat. Michael Swan scored a brace with Robert Shaw and BaileyWhite adding singles to give the home side a comfortable victory andanother three points.
NithsdaleWanderers came outon top in their match at Sanquhar against AbbeyVale in a five goal thriller that saw the home side still unbeaten at home sinceAugust last year.This was despite playing with ten menformuch of the game after DavidThomson was sentoff following a second yellow card after they had taken the lead through Rhys Griffiths.
Nithsdale’s second goal came from a Sean McKenzie penalty and with the teams locked at two-all following two goals fromTommy Goss forVale and time running out the home side produced a late winner whenStuart Bell poked the ball home.
DumfriesYMCA managed to takea point from their match against Lochmaben at Lockerbie in aone-all draw with both goals coming in the first half. A Robbie McIllwraith free-kickgave the home side the lead with the visitors skipper AaronJardine levelling the match a minute before the break.
The same scoreline was recorded at Blairmount Park with NewtonStewart and Mid Annandale sharing the points.Grant Fitzimmons gave the Creesiders the lead that they held until late in the match when a DeanSmith cross was deflected into the net for an owngoal that saw the match ending in aone-all draw.
