A broken manhole cover caused traffic chaos in Dumfries this week.

A set of traffic lights was erected on the A75 on the outskirts of town to allow workers to repair the problem.

But the move coincided with the closure of the A709 Lockerbie to Dumfries road for resurfacing.

And drivers seeking an alternative route into town via Collin found themselves caught up in huge tailbacks at the lights.

The ripple effect caused congestion across the town.

Journeys that the week before took just 15 minutes were taking up to an hour.

Many fed-up drivers voiced their frustrations on social media.

Tracy Dalziel said: “It was absolute chaos. It took one hour to get from Heathhall to Dumfries High School.”

And Margaret Findlater said: “I left Heathhall at 9.05am for the town centre for a class at 9.30am. I never even got out of Heathhall by 9.31am. Absolute gridlock.”

Residents of Collin have also voiced road safety fears.

Sam Rae said: “I didn’t walk the kids to Collin Primary School this morning due to the previous morning the speed of the cars driving through the village made pavement walking feel unsafe so I drove. That was a big mistake.”

Edward Elder added: “It’s only a matter of time until there’s a crash on the junction crossing the dual carriageway and at the speed people travel there will be a death.”

The council is responsible for the A709 closure with the A75 falling under Scotland Transerv’s jurisdiction.

A council spokesperson said: “The works on the A75 was recorded as a road safety hazard.

“The closure of the A709 was planned well in advance and has been well publicised.

“The signposted diversion route for this closure is via the A75 west towards the A701 and then B7076 and A709 – the work being carried out on the A75 is not in the diversion but locals would appear to be using this and travelling through Collin rather than using the signposted route, which would appear to have contributed to the delays.”

The Openreach manhole cover was repaired by Wednesday afternoon.

A company spokesperson said: “The safety of road users has got to be the top priority. With permission from Scotland Transerv, our contractors carried out repairs as swiftly as possible due to the danger posed to traffic.

“We’re very sorry for any disruption caused by this emergency work.” The A 709 Dumfries to Lockerbie road
