Trio hit the right notes for NY show at Islesteps
Alex Ross and his trio from Edinburgh were guest artistes and‘first foots’ to welcome in the New Year for the Islesteps Accordion and Fiddle Club on a cold January evening at Locharbriggs Social Club.
Alex, leader of the Edinburgh based Cadgers in the Cannongate Ceilidh Band, was joined by Adam Young on accordion and Kenneth Ross on drums.
Making their first appearance in the Dumfries area, the trio gave two excellent sessions of music to suit all tastes, Scottish jigs and reels, some of Alex’s own compositions along with memories of Jimmy Shand, Andrew Rankine and Ian Powrie etc mixed together with continental musettes, tangos and waltzes, all much enjoyed by the large audience.
Well known to audiences in the Scottish Borders and Lothians, Alex’s name is now well established in Dumfries as a fine entertainer and accordionist.
Compere John Caskie had earlier wished everyone a Happy New Year and best wishes for 2019 before inviting local and visiting accordionists, pianists, drummers, tin whistle and fiddle players to grace the stage and entertain during the evening.
Time restraints once again meant that many players had to forego their spot in order to get the entertainment programme completed in the time allowed.
They were assured they would be first on the stage at the next meeting.
Performing on the night, were accordionists Bill McMinn, Deryn Waitt, Robin Waitt, Susan Power, Newby Park, Norman Swainston, John Douglas, Kenny Jackson, James Frazer, John Waugh, Barbara Fisher and Andy Phillips. Fiddle players John Cowan and Ian Woods, drummers Robert Dorrance, Billy Porter, Ian Riddet and Graeme Woods, on piano William McRobert and Nicky McMichan and tin whistle player William Little.
John concluded the night by thanking the social club staff for their ready cooperation in setting up and hosting the club meetings, the many folk who provided raffle prizes and the players, both the local and visiting musicians and the guest artistes for getting 2019 off to a fine start.
The club next meet in Locharbriggs and District Social Club on Tuesday, February 5 when Northumberland accordionist Robert Whitehead and his band will be guest artistes.
Festive show Rotarians Dawn Graham and Alistair Bremner of the Dumfries Devorgilla Rotary Club, along with Santa, presented a cheque to Dumfries Y Gymnastics Club.
