Trio hit the right notes for NY show at Islesteps

Alex Ross and his trio from Ed­in­burgh were guest artistes and‘first foots’ to wel­come in the New Year for the Islesteps Ac­cor­dion and Fid­dle Club on a cold Jan­uary evening at Lochar­briggs So­cial Club.

Alex, leader of the Ed­in­burgh based Cadgers in the Can­non­gate Ceilidh Band, was joined by Adam Young on ac­cor­dion and Ken­neth Ross on drums.

Mak­ing their first ap­pear­ance in the Dum­fries area, the trio gave two ex­cel­lent ses­sions of mu­sic to suit all tastes, Scot­tish jigs and reels, some of Alex’s own com­po­si­tions along with mem­o­ries of Jimmy Shand, An­drew Rank­ine and Ian Powrie etc mixed to­gether with con­ti­nen­tal musettes, tan­gos and waltzes, all much en­joyed by the large au­di­ence.

Well known to au­di­ences in the Scot­tish Bor­ders and Loth­i­ans, Alex’s name is now well es­tab­lished in Dum­fries as a fine en­ter­tainer and ac­cor­dion­ist.

Com­pere John Caskie had ear­lier wished ev­ery­one a Happy New Year and best wishes for 2019 be­fore invit­ing lo­cal and vis­it­ing ac­cor­dion­ists, pi­anists, drum­mers, tin whis­tle and fid­dle play­ers to grace the stage and en­ter­tain dur­ing the evening.

Time re­straints once again meant that many play­ers had to forego their spot in or­der to get the en­ter­tain­ment pro­gramme com­pleted in the time al­lowed.

They were as­sured they would be first on the stage at the next meet­ing.

Per­form­ing on the night, were ac­cor­dion­ists Bill McMinn, Deryn Waitt, Robin Waitt, Susan Power, Newby Park, Nor­man Swain­ston, John Dou­glas, Kenny Jack­son, James Frazer, John Waugh, Bar­bara Fisher and Andy Phillips. Fid­dle play­ers John Cowan and Ian Woods, drum­mers Robert Dor­rance, Billy Porter, Ian Rid­det and Graeme Woods, on pi­ano Wil­liam McRobert and Nicky McMichan and tin whis­tle player Wil­liam Lit­tle.

John con­cluded the night by thank­ing the so­cial club staff for their ready co­op­er­a­tion in set­ting up and host­ing the club meet­ings, the many folk who pro­vided raf­fle prizes and the play­ers, both the lo­cal and vis­it­ing mu­si­cians and the guest artistes for get­ting 2019 off to a fine start.

The club next meet in Lochar­briggs and District So­cial Club on Tuesday, Fe­bru­ary 5 when Northum­ber­land ac­cor­dion­ist Robert White­head and his band will be guest artistes.

Fes­tive show Ro­tar­i­ans Dawn Gra­ham and Alis­tair Brem­ner of the Dum­fries Devorgilla Ro­tary Club, along with Santa, pre­sented a cheque to Dum­fries Y Gym­nas­tics Club.
