Coronavirus alert at Lockerbie site

Dumfries & Galloway Standard - - FRONT PAGE - STEPHEN TEMLETT

A Dumfries shire school has a confirmed case of coronavirus.

The council’s education director Gillian Brydson wrote to parents and carers of children at Lockerbie Academy on Wednesday after a positive test.

The Standard understands that the case relates to a senior pupil.

Contact tracing has been started with the local Test and Protect team working with teaching staff but the school remains open.

Ms Brydson told parents: “We have been advised by the NHS Dumfries and Galloway’s Health

Protection Team that there has been a confirmed case of Covid-19 within Lockerbie Academy.

“This letter is to inform you of the current situation and provide advice from public health on how to support your child.

“Contact tracing processes have been activated and any member of our school community who has been identified as a close contact with the confirmed case has been contacted or still to be contacted by the Test and Protect team, and will be isolating or will have to isolate at home for the 14-day period.

“The school remains open and your child should continue to attend if they remain well.”

However one parent raised a concern that contact tracing hadn’t been in touch with his daughter who was in contact with the pupil who tested positive.

The man, who did not want to be named, said: “They’re staying open saying they tracked everyone. My daughter was next to the person in English and no one asked her a thing now she’s refusing to go to school.

“I’m not sure why it’s hush-hush it’s like wildfire there.”

The letter from Ms Brydson informed parents that the council was working in partnership with the school, NHS Dumfries and Galloway, Public Health Scotland. In it she said:“This multiagency group has assessed the infection and prevention control plans are in place in the school, and they have confidence in the stringent measures we have introduced to manage the situation.”

Last month Georgetown Primary and Nursery had a Covid-19 scare but it turned out to be a false alarm.

A pupil had initially tested positive but following re-testing they returned a negative result.
