Aviary expansion for peacocks after developers offer support
A GENEROUS donation has seen an aviary expansion for the peacocks at Pittencrieff Park.
Developers Taylor Wimpey and their local contractors, Kingdom Maintenance, donated their materials and expertise to expand the birds’ enclosure, adding new ramps and shelter while also boosting the existing sand-pit.
Suzi Ross, peafowl warden for the peacocks in Pittencrieff Park commented: “We are extremely grateful for the support that we have received from Taylor Wimpey and Kingdom Maintenance, and we can’t thank them enough for their generous donation of materials and their expertise.
“Added to a large donation of timber and sand that we received from MKM Timber, we’re absolutely delighted with the ramps, shelter and sand-pit extension that has been created for the birds, which adds to the overall improvements that we have made to the aviary from the generous donations that we’ve received from so many members of the local community.”
The team at the regional head office of Taylor Wimpey wanted to join other local businesses and residents who have made a huge effort to help the peacocks after youths broke in to the aviary and left one of the peacocks, Malcolm, dead, and another, Louis, badly injured in May.
Pauline Mills, the land and planning director for Taylor Wimpey East Scotland, said: “We are delighted to be able to support the team involved with the peacocks in Pittencrieff Park. These beautiful birds are part of the fabric of Dunfermline, and we were saddened to hear what happened to the birds and their aviary earlier this year.
“We’re also very proud of the work our local contractor, Kingdom Maintenance, and what they have been able to achieve over the course of a week, which has made such an improvement to the birds’ outdoor enclosure.”
It comes after volunteers at the aviary warned that the enclosure was not fit for purpose, telling the Press earlier this month that they were facing flooding and freezing temperatures with “no help” from Fife Council.
Grant Taylor, managing director of Kingdom Maintenance, added: “I was pleased that our team could support Taylor Wimpey to provide a range of improvements to the aviary and bird enclosure in Pittencrieff Park, and to be part of the collective community effort to help this local charity get back on its feet.”
