Low’s on a high after making Kelty switch

- By Ross Hart REPORTER KELTY HEARTS

KELTY HEARTS boss John Potter believes that new signing Nicky Low has “a bit of everything” and is “desperate” to impress.

Last Friday, the 30-year-old agreed a deal to join on loan from Championship side Arbroath until January, and could make his debut in Saturday’s League One game at Peterhead.

Low, who began his career with Aberdeen, played 28 times for Dick Campbell’s Red Lichties last season, scoring five times, as they embarked on an unlikely title challenge, which only came to an end when Kilmarnock defeated them in their penultimate match to be crowned champions.

A League Cup winner in 2014 with the Dons, which saw him score in the decisive penalty shoot-out with Inverness Caledonian Thistle, the midfielder joined Dundee in 2015 before moving on to League of Ireland side Derry City on a temporary basis before penning a permanent contract.

Another winner’s medal, in the League of Ireland Cup, came Low’s way while with the Candystripes but, in 2019, he returned to Scotland with Queen of the South.

Following a short spell at Palmerston, Low then moved on to Lowland League East Stirlingshire, whom he went on to captain, and face his new club, before joining Arbroath on loan in March last year.

That was then turned into a permanent move, on a two-year deal, when his ‘Shire contract expired, but he has now arrived at New Central Park, linking up with former Gayfield teammate Jason Thomson, who signed for Kelty earlier this month.

“I know him quite well, the club know him, and he was someone that came up and was available,” Potter told Press Sport.

“He’s one that we liked anyway, and we’d actually asked questions before about it. It wasn’t happening, so this time we managed to get it done.

“Nicky was really keen to come. We spoke to him, met him, and he was wanting to come and play football. We’re delighted to get him.

“He adds competition in an area where we are quite strong anyway but it will be good for the squad. I think he’s got a bit of everything to be honest.

“I think he can use the ball well, he’s energetic, his set-piece deliveries are great, and I think he’s got a wee bit about his game. He’s very demanding, he knows what he wants, and he’s a wee buzz bomb about the pitch.

“He’ll bring a lot to what we want.

“He’s a wee bit different to the other ones we’ve got in there so I’m looking forward to seeing him out on the pitch.”

Potter, who said that all parties would assess Low’s loan in January, continued: “I’d watched him last year in the Championship and he was one of Arbroath’s main players in a season that was very good for them, and almost got them to the Premier League.

“He’ll be an asset. He’s desperate to do well, he has played games, so he is relatively fit, so we need to just get him up and running and he’ll be a good part of our squad.

“We were keen to make it longer, but it’s what worked for Arbroath, and we’ll see where we are come January.

“Right now it’s getting him into our squad, getting him involved, getting him up to speed and taking it game by game from there.”
