Babcock create 250 new jobs at the dockyard

- By Ally McRoberts

THERE are 250 new jobs at Babcock in Rosyth and applications are now open.

The international defence company wants the new recruits for its Production Support Operative (PSO) programme at the dockyard.

This is in addition to more than 40 roles that were filled earlier this year.

Sean Donaldson, managing director at the Rosyth site, said: “We are delighted to be recruiting a further 250 PSOs and are keen to attract applicants from our local communities and the wider area.”

In practical terms, the new recruits will carry out a wide range of tasks to support production, including material-handling, forklift truckdriving, kit inspection and cable-pulling.

Mr Donaldson added that the role was diverse in nature, with clear progression routes which may include becoming a fully-qualified tradesperson in the future.

The programme has a focus, but not exclusively, on attracting candidates who are not currently in education, employment or training.

Successful candidates, once fully trained, will have the skills and experience required to support manufacturing, assembly, outfitting and commissioning activities across the Rosyth site.

Laura Anderson, who joined as a PSO in April, said: “I love what I’m doing and I’m learning something new every day.

“I’m part of a great team with all the support I need and its incredible to be involved in some of the world-class engineering programmes that we have on site – I’d encourage anyone looking to get into employment to consider applying.”

For those returning to the job market, or joining it for the first time, Babcock has partnered on an employability project developed by Kingdom Works and Fife Council to provide guidance and support.

This includes advice on completing online application forms and the opportunity to join a pre-employment training programme.

Mr Donaldson added: “Working with Kingdom Works, Fife Council and Fife College the PSO programme has enabled us to connect with a new group of potential employees, providing them with a structured route into full-time employment.

“New members of the workforce will support activities across our programmes and we look forward to welcoming the new recruits to Babcock.”

To apply, go to the babcockinternational.com website and search for ‘production support operative’ in the jobs section or email trades@babcockinternational.com for an application.

The deadline is November 4.
