Six goals shared with promoted Monarchs

DUNFERMLIN­E Carnegie Hockey Club’s men’s firsts were held to a draw after a sixgoal thriller on Saturday.

The team, which is sponsored by Edinburgh Asset Finance, had been seeking to bounce back from a 5-3 defeat at Hillhead in their

TEN top gymnasts from a West Fife club have been selected to represent Scotland at an internatio­nal tournament in Hungary.

Making up half the national squad, Acrobay athletes from 10 to 16 will face elite gymnasts from Poland, Germany, Israel, Belgium, the Czech Republic, England, Ireland and Austria at the Budapest Acro Cup.

Suzanne Fraser, head coach of the Rosythbase­d club, said: “Qualifying for this tournament is a huge deal because the selection trial is extremely tough.

“I’m always proud of our gymnasts for constantly pushing themselves to work harder and perform better. And the hours they devote to their sport second outing of the Scottish Hockey Men’s Premiershi­p season, having beaten Erskine Stewart’s Melville 6-2 in their opener.

They welcomed FMGM Monarchs to Woodmill High School, newly-promoted this season, and who were seeking their first point having suffered 5-1 and 4-1 losses to Kelburne and Clydesdale respective­ly.

But, despite Josh Love, Gary Clark and Andrew Doyle all shows their devotion, and the dedication of their families who support them.

“Competing against gymnasts from so many other countries makes us all raise our game. So we can’t wait to see what our gymnasts achieve this weekend. We’re channellin­g our nerves into excitement.”

Competing in the 1116 women’s pair categories are Grace Crawford, 15, and Ava Curtis, 11.

In the 11-16 women’s group category are Rosa Morrison, 14; Poppy Pain, 13; Belle Temple, 10; Scarlett Haldane, 16; Emma Nelson, 14; and Ella Gracie, 11.

Nephele Idehen, 16, and Daisy Campbell, 13, have been chosen for the 12-18 women’s pair category. hitting the net for Carnegie, their opponents netted three goals of their own to claim a draw. Carnegie travel to Uddingston this Saturday for a 12pm start.

Meanwhile, two club players have travelled to South Africa to compete at the Masters World Cup.

Lorna McLintock and Sheila Duncan are in the Scotland W50 and W60 squads for the tournament in Cape Town.

A SELFLESS athletics official and volunteer has been named as the 2022 Young Official of the Year at the sportscotl­and Coaching, Officiatin­g and Volunteeri­ng (COV) Awards.

Sophie Allan, who offers her time at Pitreavie AAC, picked up the accolade in recognitio­n for her dedication and contributi­on to the sport, with nominees commenting on her positive presence that lifts coaches, officials and athletes around her.

The 21-year-old, who last year picked up the Kubenet Volunteer of the Year prize at the Scottish Women in Sport Awards, has attended more than 50 athletics events over the past decade, clocking up more than 450 hours of volunteer time at Pitreavie into the bargain, and is now the highest-qualified female athletics starter in Scotland.

After picking up her award at the ceremony, which was held at Glasgow City Chambers on Tuesday evening, Sophie said: “For me, the best part of the officiatin­g role is the under11s and 13s events, when it’s their first time on the track, and you know that you are planting the seed of athletics in their life – that’s what drives me to still be here.

“I think young people are the future of this sport and if we’ve got lots of athletes going through the programme, then we need people to officiate.
