Women’s team for Aberdour!

-

WOMEN’S football is coming to Aberdour after a new team that will represent the village was formed.

Aberdour SDC (Sports Development Club) Ladies’ Football Club are set to play in next season’s Scottish Women’s Football League (SWFL) North/East Division after their establishment in August.

The team, which will be led by head coach Ross Wortley, has been brought together after the club said 17 of its players were facing the prospect of being out of the game after their previous club, Bayside Ladies, had ceased competing.

Aberdour, who will play at Hawkcraig Park in the village, have already attracted sponsorship in the shape of the Burntisland Sands Hotel; Kirkcaldy-based Be Uniforms; and Grangemouth firm, Scotia Bearings and Hydraulics.

“There’s been a lot of work behind the scenes. The Aberdour SDC committee are very much behind us,” Wortley explained.

“There’s loads that we’ve done. We’re obviously trying to fundraise and things like that but it’s all coming together nicely.

“We’re just trying to organise a couple of friendlies in the meantime, and, obviously, we train a couple of times a week. We just keep that going until the competition starts next February.

“They’re all gelling together well so there’s a good atmosphere about the place.”

Aberdour will be affiliated officially with the Scottish Women’s Football set-up next month.

They will then be able to participate in cup and league competitions in the early part of next year.

In 2021, Wortley led Bayside to the SWFL North/East league title, and the final of the inaugural SWFL Cup, which they lost to Bishopton FC Ladies at Livingston’s Tony Macaroni Arena.
