Safety first prize as Jimmy wins £1,350
A CREATIVE Culross kid has won £1,350 with his design for a national safety competition.
Entries ranged from videos, presentations, banners, cartoons and poems designed to warn people on the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning but it was Jimmy Rawlings’ class presentation, complete with a colourful handmade poster, that bagged the UK prize.
The five-year-old was awarded £450 for himself – which mum, Raelene, says will be going straight into his savings so he can spend it on his holidays – as well as a whopping £900 for his school, Culross Primary.
Raelene told the Press: “I’m really proud that he engaged in a topic that can be quite difficult for kids and then was happy to stand up in front of the whole school and tell them about his work.
“To have then gone on and won the competition is fantastic! He draws all the time, non stop, so to find a competition that had an objective so he could learn something else as well was the motivation.
“It was good to find something that had an end goal. To go on and win it is good for him to see that if you put your mind to it, someone has to win it and it could be you!”
Jimmy’s love of art is inspired by his uncle, Christopher Brown, who is a renowned illustrator and print maker based in London.
She continued: “We all hope that Jimmy will follow in his uncle’s footsteps and continue with his passion!”
Deputy headteacher at Culross, Rhianna Tweedie, said: “Jimmy winning the competition has helped spread awareness around the dangers of carbon monoxide and how to ensure safety across the school community.
“He shared his winning presentation at our whole school assembly, providing information around what carbon monoxide is, how it affects the body and most importantly how to ensure we all stay safe!
“This was then shared with the wider school community on our home learning app Seesaw to further spread Jimmy’s advice. Families have provided super feedback on how this then guided and promoted further discussion at home. Team Culross would like to say a massive thank you to Jimmy for teaching us all about CO safety.”
