Success on the pitch for Carnegie athletes
TWO rising West Fife hockey stars are celebrating after they enjoyed Scottish Cup glory last Friday night.
Dunfermline Carnegie Hockey Club duo Joshua Love and Theo Wood were invited to play for Dundee’s Grove Menzieshill in the under-18 competition - and played their part in helping them win the trophy.
S5 Queen Anne High School pupil Joshua, and Theo, who is in S4 at Inverkeithing High, were asked to play for Grove Menzieshill after their own club couldn’t raise an under-18 side to participate.
In the match with Uddingston, which proved to be tight and entertaining, both players made telling contributions, with Theo going close early on after being played through by his team-mate, who scored a well-taken equaliser in the final quarter.
Grove Menzieshill twice had to level the match and, on the second occasion, Joshua was involved once more, winning a decisive penalty corner in the final minute, which was converted, sending the game to a running penalty shoot-out.
He didn’t need to take the final effort as the Dundee side, for whom Theo converted with a spin that allowed him to slot home, prevailed 3-1.
Elsewhere at the weekend, men’s and ladies teams from Dunfermline Carnegie were in action.
There were victories for the men’s firsts, seconds, thirds and development teams, but the fours were beaten.
The ladies firsts also lost out, 4-0 to St Andrews University, as did the twos, at home to Watsonians fives.
They had been seeking to build on a 2-1 win over Edinburgh University the previous week - where all of the games came in the final two quarters of the game - but they fell to defeat by the same scoreline at the weekend.
Carnegie held their own throughout, and put Watsonians under pressure whilst creating goalscoring opportunities, but conceded in the final minutes of the match.
Although Jodie Hood responded quickly with an equaliser, Watsonians scored from a penalty corner in the final seconds to take the victory.
