The Galloping Gourmets

If fabulous food is your recipe for a gourmet getaway, Suffolk has more than its fair share of venues, food and drink festivals, artisan producers and fresh-from-the-water seafood sold at fishermen’s shacks to tempt the tastebuds. Thirsty? Then why not sample Adnam’s finest brews and tipples in its home town of Southwold, where it makes not just ales, but award winning gins, whiskies and vodkas? Greene King has its HQ in Bury St Edmunds, while St Peter’s brewery is in Bungay. If you enjoy a drop of cider, then try Aspall’s Cyder, from Stonham Aspal near Debenham

As ‘the foodie county’, Suffolk has whole villages and towns devoted to appetite appeal, such as Orford, where you’ll find awardwinning Pump Street Bakery, Pinneys, the Crown and Castle, and fish pie at the ‘no frills’ Butley Oysterage, described by The Times as one of the top 30 things to eat before you die.

On the other side of the county, Lavenham is a magnet for foodies, with award-winning Lavenham Butchers, and Hadleys Ice Cream, as well as The Great House, serving the finest French cuisine this side of the Channel, and The Swan Hotel. There’s also a great farmers’ market in the village hall every month.
