After a pleasant Friday afternoon drive to west Suffolk, we arrived at Tuddenham Mill, a luxury boutique hotel, restaurant, wedding and meeting venue near Newmarket. We were there for an overnight break – dinner at the hotel and a stay in one of the new Meadow Nooks, romantically set in 12 acres of meadow, next to the mill stream and a short walk from the mill.
The Nooks are rustic, yet offer all the indulgence of a stay in the main hotel – a king-size bed, feather duvet, extra large pillows and fine cotton bed linen, Missoni dressing gowns, tea, fresh coffee, orange juice and homemade biscuits, and a little tipple of sloe gin for a nightcap.
The en suite bathroom has a walk-in power shower, exclusive ESPA toiletries, and fluffy bath sheets. The Meadow Nooks also come with a smart Sony TV, Pure radio with Bluetooth and free Wi-Fi.
At dinner we ordered a bottle of Torea New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc (my favourite) which came with a very moreish homemade barley loaf bread and Lincolnshire poacher’s butter.
For starters my partner chose smoked haddock rarebit, baked ham and chives. It tasted amazing. For mains, we both settled on Highland cattle beef, 28-day sirloin, served with roasted bone marrow, Madeira cream, tomato concasse, chunky chips and land cress. Both were cooked perfectly to our preferences. For dessert, we indulged in Yorkshire rhubarb baba, demerara ice cream and sweet walnuts – all to die for.
It was a superb experience at Tuddenham Mill. So, if you’re looking for a boutique hotel and restaurant with a difference, one that offers plenty of cosy comfort in a romantic, rustic setting, this could be it.
