Mooney’s hat-trick heroics keeps the Pilgrims in play-off hunt

-

KELSEY Mooney reflected on another hat-trick for Boston United as they stormed to a 3-0 home win over Farsley Celtic to push themselves back into the play-off places.

Fresh from his four-goal haul at Gloucester City a week earlier, Mooney notched another treble to sink Farsley at the Jakemans Community Stadium.

He turned away from Rudy

Misambo to hand United a 30th-minute lead, before heading home Martin Woods’ free-kick six minutes after half-time and exchanging passes with Michael Gyasi six minutes from time to seal the match ball and United’s latest home win.

Mooney’s heroics meant United managed back-to-back hat-tricks for the first time since 1973 – and the player himself became the first to record successive trebles since Peter Thompson in 1966.

Breaking down the goals, Mooney said: “We just had to move the ball around quickly, get their back four shifting across and eventually the gaps did open up. [For the first goal] They didn’t shut off one of the gaps, so I found it, rolled the defender and then I thought I’d missed with my shot but it hit the post and went in.

“I had a free header in the six-yard box [for the second] which I didn’t expect playing against a team like this who usually head away any cross that comes in their box, so I couldn’t believe my luck for that one.

“[Michael Gyasi] has been incredible in the way he has come on from the start of the season, he always makes an impact so he did brilliantly to lay it back to me and it was a simple finish [for the hat-trick goal].”
