Pupils excel in charity role

-

Staff reporter The News and Salvation Army’s joint Christmas Toy Appeal and East Kilbride Community Food Bank were this year’s good causes supported by Calderglen High School’s charity prefects.

The senior pupils’commitment to the two charities kick-started a fundraising frenzy which realised a magnificent total of £2600 and saw pupils donate gifts and nonperishable food items.

Over 1000 items were donated to the food bank and the first and second year pupils organised a number of sponsored events, including a basketball game, a sponsored silence, a dodgeball tournament and silly walks challenge.

And while the youngsters had fun, they were raising money for others less fortunate than themselves.

As a result of their efforts, a fantastic collection toys/gifts and a cheque for £1500 was uplifted by Carol Gillies from the Salvation Army just before Christmas and Mark Morris, from Calderwood Baptist Church, on behalf of the food bank, collected the food items and a cheque for £1360.

The pupils pictured, Caitlynn Richardson, Carly Semple, Emma Spence, Lewis Morton, Ross Tough, Heather Donnelly, Cameron MacLean, Jade Alston and Jill Ferguson, organised their own individual sponsored events and raised over £600 between them.
