£10m investment in housing

More than £10 million is to be i nvested i n housing i n East Renfrewshi­re.

The council has outlined its homes masterplan for the next five years.

It i ncludes plans for around 200 new af f ordable homes – plus the first council houses ever built by East Renfrewshi­re.

The ambitious proposals are s e t out i n t he c ouncil’s Strategic Housing Investment Plan 2015/16 – 2019/20.

The £10.4m investment is being made by t he council, housing associatio­ns, the Scottish Government’s Aff ordable Housing Supply Programme and private developer contributi­ons.

There are plans for a total of 207 new affordable homes across the area. These include mainly homes for social rent along with a number of shared equity properties.

The c o unci l i s t o b uy 1 0 one-bedroom homes ‘off the shelf ’ from private owners. This is to address the shortage of one-bed properties and ease waiting list demand.

Seven council houses will be bui l t i n Pol noon St re e t , Eaglesham, and will be ready f o r t h e i r f i r s t t e na nt s n e x t year.

Are a s b e i n g t a r g e t e d f o r building i nclude Barrhead, Newton Mearns, Darnley and Neilston.

Around 20 per cent of t he new homes will be suitable for wheelchair users and older people.

Convener for housing, C o u n c i l l o r Da n n y De v l i n , said: “We need more affordable housing and that’s exactly what we’ll be setting out to deliver over the next five years.

“These are bold proposals to create the type of housing that local residents want and d e s e r v e a nd I ’ m d e l i g ht e d to see the council’s housing services driving this ahead.

“Every part of East Renfrewshi­re, from Neilston t o Eaglesham, wil l s ee new b r i g ht , modern s o c i a l r e nt homes built.

“Mo r e t h a n 2 0 0 h o me s , £10.4m investment, accessible properties and our first ever council homes makes f or a dynamic programme that will make a difference to hundreds of local residents.”

The Strategic Housing Investment Plan will be s u b mi t t e d t o t h e S c o t t i s h Government for confirmati­on early next year.
