2015 PREVIEW BMW’s Detroit debuts
BMW will launch an entire new model series in one fell swoop at next month’s Detroit Auto Show.
It means the trio of 6 Series Coupe, Convertible and Gran Coupe will be unveiled together on January 9 before taking centre stage on the prestige brand’s stand. UK sales begin in March.
Highlighting the new generation models are some sharp external styling revisions, while the interiors get a more sporty feel courtesy of fresh trim materials and lighting, while there’s also a more extensive range of standard and personalisation features.
BMW’s ConnectedDrive navigation and info package is fitted to every model, while Concierge Ser vices accessed through an embedded SIM card allow drivers to set up a bespoke supply of connected-car services.
All petrol models come with a sports exhaust system with a switchable valve to add a more intense growl to the engine soundtrack, while aerodynamic improvements mean the six-cylinder models – petrol and diesel – are more fuel-efficient than before. Through features such as Dynamic Damper Control, Active Drive and Integral Active Steering, owners will also now able to create a made-to-measure driving experience.
The new range will again consist of an open-top Convertible, a classic Coupe model and the longerwheelbase four-door Gran Coupe, the latter now claiming almost half of 6 Series sales.
All three body styles are available with a choice of six-cylinder and V8 engines, and the 3.0-litre 3 1 3 bhp t ur b o di e s e l uni t i n t he 6 4 0 d models and 320bhp petrol engine in 640i versions are also now more fuel-efficient thanks to EfficientDynamics features and aerodynamic improvements.
As a result, CO2 emissions are down at 139g/ km on the 640d SE Coupe, yet all 6 Series models can accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.5 seconds or less. BMW says it will reveal the UK model line-up, pricing and spec next month, but the range will include SE, M Sport and Sport versions, with the M6 models as the sporting flagships.
