Sport stars crowned

May was a massive month for East Kilbride with our football teams, rugby club and cricket squad all performing well on the field.
And that month was also the time East Kilbride Sports Council chose to reflect on the town’s top performers.
On Saturday, May 10 the Sports Personalities of the Year were crowned at the Village Theatre and women’s footballer Megan Sneddon took the top prize for her outstanding achievements.
She won the overall award after she was named the Players’ Player of the Year in the Scottish Women’s Premier League and also scooped the Player of the Year prize at club side Rangers Ladies.
Meanwhile, karate athlete Marc MacAulay won the adult male prize after he won gold at the British Championships and was selected for Scotland’s Under-21 squad at both the European and World Championships.
Awards also went to inline hockey star Kobe Barber (U12 male), athletes Aiden Gilbride (U18 male) and Emma Lawton (U12 female), as well as swimmer Meg Finnon (U18 female).
Club of the Year was Strathaven Dynamo Football Club, while East Kilbride Pirates scooped the senior team prize and St Kenneth’s Primary School’s athletics squad won the junior team category.
Claremont Colts claimed an awards double on the night with Alan Ross claiming the coach of the year prize and Elaine Rinn claiming administrator of the year.
Bowler Bill Hendry won the veteran award, while Claremont’s Harry Beattie won the services to sport gong.
