Super Meg wins two junior titles

-

Nineteen swimmers from EK Amateur Swimming Club f i nished a golden year i n style when they competed wi t h S o u t h L a n a r k s h i r e at the National Short Course Championships in Edinburgh last week.

With some of the ver y biggest names i n Br i t i s h s wimming i n at t e ndance – Murdoch, Mil e y , Ja mieson, Wallace, Si mmonds, Tancock, to name but a few – this was always going to be a tough meet for the EK youngsters, but as seems to be the case these days they delivered the goods.

In a gli t t er i ng weekend, Meg Finnon took the Scottish junior title in both the 400m and 800m freestyle, breaking the Scottish junior record in the 800m for the second time this year with a time of 8.37.16.

Meg also collected t he Citrus Trophy for the top swim by a junior female at the championships, and broke the EKASC club record for the 200m butterfly in the B Final.

It has been a remarkable year for the 16-year-old and one hopes she can consolidate her place as one of the bright new hopes for Scottish swimming next year.

A tenacious Erin Holmes made the B final of the 50m backstroke, equalling her club record of 30.15 seconds and it can only be a matter of time before the 16-year-old dips under the 30 second mark in this event. And in a sparkling swim Olivia Jackson, also 16, took half a second off her PB to make the B final of the 50m breaststroke in a time of 33.42 seconds.

For the rest of the young squad competing at this level, it can be as much about experience as results, but the numbers qualifying for the event tell their own tale about how much strength in depth the club has.

Many managed several strong personal best t i mes, as well as enjoying the illustrious company and spectacle of the event.

Head coach Andy Figgins was de l i g ht e d wi t h t he s wi mmers’ performance and told the News: “This was always going to be a tough meet for the end of season with very few swimmers going to be able to progress to finals due to the events being open age

“But, once again, the EK swimmers stepped up and took on the challenge with a great attitude and excellent commitment. This toughness will put them in a good place for next year’s challenges.”

The full squad was Angus Barr, Bethany Brodie, Lisa Currie, Jack Elby, Meg Finnon, Catriona Fowlie, Scott Gibson, Bobbi Greig, Erin Holmes, Olivia Jackson, Richard Laird, Mark McCrae, Katie McIntyre, Ross McPherson, Nikki Miller, Rachel Saxon, Megan Smith and Ross Young.
