EK Rep tackle Ruth Ellis play

- Andrea O’Neill

After packing out the house with panto Dick Whittington, the EK Rep Theatre’s season continues into 2015 with a gripping drama.

Amanda Whittington’s play The Thrill of Love dramatises the true story of Ruth Ellis – the last woman in Britain to be hanged.

This play, directed by David Legge, t a k e s a f re s h l ook at t he woman behind the headlines.

Ruth Ellis was a divorcee with a young child to care for and worked in the kind of nightclubs with more than drink on offer.

The girls worked hard and played hard while dreaming of movie star lives.

Ruth becomes obsessed with a wealthy, womanising racing driver and fame finally arrives – but not in the way she had imagined.

Why does the relationship end in murder?

Why does she plead not guilty and then offer no defence? Why does she show no remorse? Who is she trying to protect? This i ntense and gripping play attempts to answer all these questions and marks the change in the judiciary here in Britain.

This wonderful and dramatic play will also celebrate the EK Rep’s 60th anniversary year celebrations.

The production runs at the Village Theatre from February 18-21. Curtain up at 7. 30pm. Ti c ket s are pr i c ed £ 7. 50/£ 5. 50 concessions. S eason tickets are also available. Ask at the Box Office for details.
