Grateful for donations to charity
Dear Editor
There was a terrific response to the joint appeal by Greenhills Library staff and Greenhills and East Kilbride South Youth Club for donations of food items for local charity Loaves and Fishes.
As always, local folk have generously given various items to help people in need.
We were especially delighted that several items for young children were included in the donations.
On behalf of the youth club, can I please say a huge thank you to everyone who supported the appeal.
I would also like to say a big thanks to the library staff for all their help. It was really appreciated. The campaign for mandatory CCTV in slaughterhouses has received celebrity backing this week, with Ricky Gervais sharing links to an important campaign petition on the Government’s website.
More than 50,000 people have now signed the petition and, if it attracts 100,000 signatures, it will be debated in parliament.
The campaign for CCTV is in response to Animal Aid’s investigations that found evidence of widespread cruelty inside UK slaughterhouses, including animals being kicked, punched, beaten, burned with cigarettes and given punishing electric shocks.
We also filmed animals being dragged by their ears, picked up by their fleeces and thrown, and improperly stunned.
TV vets Emma Milne, Marc Abraham and Pete Wedderburn also support the campaign, as does 76 per cent of the public, according to a YouGov poll. More than 120 MPs have also signed an Early Day Motion in support of it.
Anyone wishing to add their name to the petition can do so at www.tinyurl. com/CCTVpetition
