Hulk Hogan inspires EK Milan’s cup win

Social media can be a weird and wonderful medium, but the power it possesses was clear for all to see in December when tiny Sunday League side EK Milan won their first-ever trophy off the back of a Twitter campaign.

T h e a ma t e u r s i d e t w e e t e d countless celebritie­s across t h e g l o b e, a s k i n g f o r word s o f encouragem­ent ahead of their cup final with Southside Burgh.

And the results were astonishin­g.

Soon enough the club had the likes of crooner Engelbert Humperdinc­k backing them and, incredibly, wrestling legend Hulk Hogan got involved telling the team to “kick some ass, brother”.

Tweets f rom Happy Days star Henry Winkler, ex-footballer David Ginola and the cast of Still Game followed.

Our story sent the club’s profile soaring within hours as they appeared on various sites online, national newspapers and even on television with an appearance on STV’s Riverside Show.

Word of their famous celebrity ba c k e r s a l s o r e a c he d a s f a r a s America and Hungary with fans from Italian giants AC Milan taking a keen interest.

With a groundswel­l of support in their favour, EK Milan rode the moment u m i n t o t h e Gl a s g o w District Sunday Football Championsh­ip Cup final at Tor y g l e n on December 1 4 a nd claimed the trophy after a penalty shootout.

Befitting of the thrilling buildup, the match ended 3-3 after 90 minutes and goalkeeper Danny Thomson was the hero as he saved two penalties to take the trophy back to East Kilbride.

After the triumph, club chairman Gary Henderson said: “So many got behind our underdog story. It’s been an unforgetta­ble experience.

“All the celebrity support from the Hulk to the Hump gave us that wee push over the line.”

But the best thing of all was seeing EK Milan use their exposure to raise nearly £500 for Yorkhill Children’s Hospital.
