Games girls do us proud
Karin Connell
There were four young women representing East Kilbride and district at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow during the summer – and they all provided moments for us to savour.
Strathaven’s Corrie Scott got the ball rolling with a bronze medal in the 50m breaststroke on Friday, July 25 and contributed to Scotland’s record medal haul of 53.
And, although they didn’t win any prizes for their efforts, three netballers impressed at the SECC as they helped Scotland finish ninth overall in their first-ever appearance at a Commonwealth Games.
Lynsey Gallagher – one of the poster girls for Team Scotland in the build-up – was joined by Karin Connell and Sam Murphy on court and the trio helped their country defeat St Lucia 58-30 in the opening pool match.
However, it proved to be a tough task for the Scots in their group as defeats to New Zealand, Jamaica, Malawi and Northern Ireland followed and they ended up in the 9th/10th place play-off.
There they took on Trinidad and Tobago and in an edgy encounter, Scotland prevailed 46-28 in front of a home crowd.
Westwood’s Sam Murphy said after the match:“This has been the best experience ever. We’ve had ups and downs but to end it with a good win was brilliant.”
In the weeks that followed Valleyfield’s Karin Connell announced her retirement from international netball after amassing 101 caps. She won her 100th cap in the group match defeat to Northern Ireland.
All three netballers – and medal winner Corrie Scott – gave us incredible moments to treasure from the‘friendly Games’.
