Double act gives Kilby the points

No joy for ex-boss on return

Craig Hastings tormented the BSC Glasgow defence after climbing off the bench East Kilbride boss Billy Ogilvie compared striker Craig Hastings to a Jack Russell after he terrorised the BSC Glasgow defence in Saturday’s 4-0 win.

Top scorer Joao Victoria and Hastings both grabbed doubles to sink BSC Glasgow, who had Aaron Murdoch sent off for kicking Bernard Coll with the score at 2-0.

Ogilvie was delighted for Hastings to grab his first goals for the club with a dogged performance, but also revealed he has a bone to pick with the local lad.

He told the News: “Hastings is like a wee Jack Russell, we just let him loose and he’s a real handful.

“He is technically very gifted, but he’s the only player I can remember in my 16 years of coaching that has frustrated me so much because he could be even better.

“I need to try and get him to think more about his game, but he’s such a maverick that I find him uncoachable at times – you just don’t know what he’s going to do.

“Sometimes I just have to let him off the leash and let him run about.

“On Saturday he was fantastic. The BSC back four couldn’t handle him. He never gave t hem a minute’s peace, but he’s a much improved player from when I first met him.

“With a bit of work he can be even better and I’m delighted for him to get his goals.”

Hastings, from The Murray, helped Kilby ensure former boss Iain King’s competitive return to K-Park turned into a nightmare.

Having del i v e re d a t ro phy f or Ki l by l ast season, t he manner of t he defeat – particularly with so many former EKFC players on the field in BSC colours – will have been hard for King to swallow.

Within 29 minutes Kilby were in front when Victoria curled home a low free-kick beyond keeper Iain Stewart, one of seven ex-EK men in the BSC squad.

Hastings was introduced in the second half and made his impact in 67 minutes, d o u b l i n g Ki l by ’s a d v a nt a g e when h e managed to turn the ball past Stewart.

Moments later Aaron Murdoch, a cup winner with Kilby, let his new side down badly when frustration got the better of him and he lashed out at Coll to all but end the game as a contest.

In 76 minutes Victoria added his second with a low drive before Hastings completed the win in 83 minutes when he curled the ball into the far corner.

The victory puts East Kilbride fourth in the Lowland League, just a point off third place Spartans.

Ogilvie added: “It was a magnificent team performance. We’ve been threatening this kind of display for a while and on Saturday we were really clinical.

“Everyone was really up for the game and I’m delighted we had that friendly with BSC a couple of weeks ago. That gave us a good look at them and I probably would have gone with different personnel otherwise.

“We went with a strong midfield because I knew we had to match their physicality in midfield and it paid off.

“BS C a re a t a l e nt e d t e a m i n a f a l s e position i n t he t able and t hey will t ake points off of a lot of sides this season.”

This Saturday East Kilbride host Preston in the league. Kick-off is 2pm.
