Trio trip light fantastic

Jaunt to Italy ends with dance scholarships

- Andrea O’Neill

A talented East Kilbride trio can pride themselves on having performed alongside some of the best dancers in the world.

Kian Wilson (14) and ten-yearolds Anna Haughy and Lucy Hunter won a scholarship to attend Corneo Dance Festival and Camp in the Italian city of Ancona through their dance school this summer.

And all three starlets are set to shine once again after landing dream return scholarships.

After impressing New York choreographer Ryan Daniel Beck – who has worked with superstar Beyoncé – the Robert Hamilton DancePoint School students won a dream trip to perform in Italy.

And all three were thrilled to get a call back to dance camp in Italy next year, with Kian and Anna also landing a once-in-a-lifetime scholarship in New York City.

Duncanrig pupil Kian from West Mains said: “I had the best week ever working with all the different choreographers and learning new dance techniques.

“Italy was an amazing experience. I left feeling inspired and can not wait to return next year.

“I can’t believe how lucky I am to have been awarded another two scholarships for next year.”

Kirktonholme Primary pupil Anna, also from West Mains, said she loved Italy, meeting dance teachers from around the world and learning different dance styles.

She said: “It was an experience I will never forget. The gala night was a fantastic end to a great week of dance and I was really happy l won a scholarship for New York.”

Greenhills girl Lucy, who last year became the youngest starlet to train at New York’s Broadway Dance Center, said she was “absolutely buzzing” after receiving another scholarship to Italy.

Following a week of intense training in dance camp the youngsters get to showcase their talents in a gala.

Kian’s proud mum Laura said: “This was a fun and extremely successful week with Kian and the two girls being offered more scholarships.

“While in Italy Kian was also asked to participate in a promotional video for an Italian choreographer and agreed to be a live model at an art event. I am so proud of the kids’ hard work and dedication.

“Robert Hamilton DancePoint is an amazing school and provides endless opportunities to our kids for which we can’t be more grateful.”

The starry-eyed trio are no strangers to the spotlight having taken centre stage at Glasgow’s Pavilion Theatre for last year’s Christmas panto Santa Claus is Coming to Town.

They performed along with the likes of panto legend Johnny Mac, Dean Park, River City star Stephen Purdon, Michele Gallagher and Gary Lamont.

Kian also landed a slot in the children’s dance group in Treasure Island the previous year.

And St Vincent’s pupil Lucy has appeared on TV talent shows Britain’s Got Talent twice and Got to Dance with local dance groups Mini Moves and Dance Illusion.
