Should ex-corporation HQ be demolished?
Other ideas for Atholl House site
With the demolition order being granted for Atholl House, an East Kilbride landmark, campaigners have been up in arms trying to save the building.
After a supermarket bid fell through, the future of the site is uncertain and now owners, Ediston Opportunity Fund, have revealed plans are in place for the building to be demolished and the site cleared by Christmas.
Calderwood pensioner Barney Spence didn’t see any need to knock the building down – especially because there were no solid plans in place for its future.
Janette Spence, Barney’s wife of 61 years, was of the same opinion.
She said: “If they have something in mind for it then we are in agreement.”
They also said that they should turn the site into a facility for the elderly because there are “less and less places for the elderly to go”.
Deegan Murray, from the Village, said that although he wasn’t particularly bothered by the demolition, he would like to see a leisure facility put in its place.
“They should build a sports centre, we need more leisure facilities”, he said.
Jordan Stewart, also from the Village, shared the same indifferent feelings towards the demolition, but was in favour of a Nandos, adding: “We need more restaurants.”
