Bogus workmen

An 88-year-old woman with dementia was duped into handing over £600 for home repairs that were never carried out, prompting a police warning that bogus workmen are operating in the town.

News readers were horrified by the despicable crime.

Jim Hillon posted: “Can’t get much lower than that disgusting.”

Caroline Rennie said: “They will con anybody.”

Yvonne Goldie wrote: “Can’t believe this is happening.”

Batman in business

A caped crusader hopes to become a full-time superhero after helping East Kilbride youngsters and raising money for charity. Scott Allan dresses up as the hero Batman for kids’ parties and events and found himself an online star after helping one youngster who was having issues at nursery.

His story went viral with readers heaping praise on The Dark Knight.

Kerry Cliffe said: “High 5...so nice to see nice things been done to help keep up the good work.”

Emma J Swallow posted: “What a fantastic thing to do.”

Mark McKerrell wrote:“Heart of gold oor Scotty.”

Atholl House demolition

The owners of the former East Kilbride Development Corporation headquarters have granted a warrant for its demolition but campaigners are making a last ditch attempt to save the landmark building.

The majority of News readers, however, said they will not be sad to see it go.

Steven Grant said:“‘The building is of historical importance’... I hate that excuse. The building is an eyesore, let them rip it down and erect purposebuilt housing.”

Peter J Watt wrote: “By all means rip it down but build something that will bring jobs to the town not more houses... Rolls Royce gone, houses soon to be built, same in the Kelvin... every time there’s an industrial unit removed there’s another house put in its place.”

Carol O’Connor posted: “Happy for it to be demolished so long as something useful and aesthetic is built in its place. Too many derelict, eyesore brown field sites in EK while green field sites are ripped apart.”

Liz Dawson said: “If they pull it down more council houses should be built in its place!”

Chris Anderson added: “Absolute eyesore. Hope they knock front of centre down too.”
