East Kilbride Football Club sent the town football crazy when they played Celtic in the Scottish Cup last season.

The mighty minnows lost 2-0 in a match that captured the imagination of the whole country ... and now thanks to their magnificent effort the club made a charity the winner this week.

The K-Park side donated £1500 earned from their famous cup run to East Kilbride and District Dementia Carers’ Group.

Kilby chairman Mark Horner told the News: “As we prepare to embark upon another Scottish Cup campaign, we felt it was very important that some of the benefits from last season’s historic cup run were shared with good causes in the local community.

“The East Kilbride and District Dementia Carers’ Group is very close to our hearts, and is just one of the local groups to have benefitted from the Scottish Cup run that the club enjoyed last season.

“As a proud community club, we will always aim to ensure that benefits of our successes can be shared throughout the town.”

Chair of the carers’ group, Councillor Archie Buchanan, was delighted they had netted the donation from the football club.

The charity this year must raise £50,000 in donations to ensure their day care centre continues to provide dementia suffers with life-changing personalised care and offer much-needed support to their families and carers.

There is still some way to go before they reach their target.

Archie said: “This type of support from EKFC is crucial to the ongoing care we provide at our day care centre.”

Meanwhile any group or individual who, like Kilby, would like to assist the group by fundraising can contact co-ordinator Brian Doig on 01355 2244123.
