WestCup journey underway

-

It was a happy end to the weekend for East Kilbride Ladies as they bounced back from a league defeat on Saturday to book their place in the second round of the West District Cup 24 hours later.

EK beat Hillhead 3-1 on Sunday to extinguish the pain of a 2-1 defeat to Ardrossan.

Julianna Maxton put EK in front at Hillhead after what can only be described as a melee in the D.

EK made a few more chances but the Hillhead keeper was equal to the task and the home side soon clawed their way back into the game.

They made it 1-1 just before half time when Shona Kinloch’s stick got in the way of a strong strike from a short corner to put the ball high into the net.

In the second half an improved EK team took the game by the scruff of the neck, working harder to support players on the ball, and EK got their rewards with a second goal.

From the top of the D the ball was slipped to Fiona Williamson and her fine shot deflected into the net by opposition player of the match Rosie Campbell.

EK keeper Clair Ormond pulled off a couple of good saves to keep the local side ahead and it paid off when their lead was extended from another short corner.

A flick at goal by Sonya Andrews was well saved by the keeper and Sheona Hutchison sent home the rebound.

Meanwhile, 24 hours earlier EK suffered defeat at the hands of defending champions Ardrossan in a league match.

Despite Sonya Andrews opening the scoring for EK, an early goal from Ardrossan in the second period levelled things, and they were the more composed team from then on, scoring again 10 minutes from time to take all three points.

In contrast the second string side had a belter on Saturday, sticking six past Kelburne away.

Claragh Kean netted a hat-trick, Alison Alexander hit two and Iona MacDonald also scored in the emphatic 6-0 win.
