Summit special as pupils conquer Tinto
Sixth year group raise cash for Kilbryde Hospice
An intrepid group of sixth year pupils from St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High School climbed Tinto Hill in South Lanarkshire to raise money for Kilbryde Hospice.
It was a remarkable experience for all involved, bringing out the sense of adventure in each of the 27 pupils.
Fortunately, the rain held off during the climb, and with this obstacle excluded, it was only the strong wind the group had to battle against on the way to the top.
The climb was 711 metres but fortunately the pupils were a hardy bunch who were dogged in their determination to reach the summit.
Sixth year pupil Stephanie English said: “With the freezing wind blowing we pushed on hard to defeat the elements and get ourselves to the top.
“A heavy mist surrounded the summit, preventing us from witnessing the wonderful views that had been described to us earlier in the day, nevertheless it was at that moment, standing there, we all felt an intense sense of achievement and relief.
“It wasn’t Mount Everest, but for most of us it may be the closest we will get.
“And whilst the ascent was testing, the descent was certainly memorable for the striking views of the Clyde Valley, with the combination of the sun shining on the hill and the clearness to see for miles, we decided that our efforts had been well rewarded.”
She added: “Our blisters and bunions are nothing in comparison to what those resident in Kilbryde Hospice are going through and I was honoured to be given the opportunity to do something to help.
“The pupils and staff of St Andrew’s and St Bride’s are honoured to fund a charity that supports the needs of all those associated with the hospice, helping them to provide the dignity, respect and care for those in the final stages of their life.
“We sincerely hope that the money we raise from our endeavours will contribute to the necessary care and support in making someone’s life that little bit better.”
