ON THE BEAT Be mindful when dressing up
In my article a few months ago I spoke about the Air Weapon Surrender Scheme and commented on the success of the scheme with over 11,000 air weapons being surrendered throughout Scotland.
I would like to take this opportunity to remind the residents of East Kilbride and Strathaven that in accordance with the new legislation which comes into effect on December 31, 2016 anyone wishing to obtain a certificate for any air weapon must have completed their application no later than October 31.
The new legislation will require any person who possesses, purchases, uses or acquires an air weapon to have a certificate to hold them legally and it will be an offence not to have a certificate for these purposes. If you are wishing to obtain a certificate you will need to remember to have your application form verified and signed and you will need to provide a valid email address and specific details of how to are going to secure the weapon.
Hopefully you won’t forget the deadline for applications as it’s also Hallowe’en!
Over the past few weeks Lanarkshire division has received a number of calls of people dressing up as clowns and frightening young children.
I would ask that this Hallowe’en everyone behaves responsibly and if you are planning on dressing up as a clown or anything equally as scary then please be mindful of children and other residents of the community who may not appreciate your chosen Hallowe’en outfit.
I want everyone to enjoy Hallowe’en but please remember to keep yourself safe now that the dark nights have come in and please be mindful of your neighbours who don’t want trick or treaters at their doors.
Also a reminder to all residents that in the next two weeks leading up to Bonfire Night please ensure that you are storing your wheelie bins correctly and not leaving them lying on the roadway, particularly after pick up.
Traditionally fireworks night leads to an increase in wheelie bin fires and I want us to work together to prevent this.
Finally, Halloween is a fun and exciting night but always remember the importance of home and personal safety.
Wishing everyone a safe (and not too scary) week.
