Hub work causes parking problems

Concerns over packed roads due to work

- Mark Pirie

The final stages of work on the East Kilbride Shopping Centre’s new hub has caused “shocking” congestion, it has been claimed.

As part of the work on the new leisure hub at the Olympia side of the shopping centre, large sections of car parks have been closed off, meaning that cars are being abandoned and parked on Rothesay Steet.

A concerned resident contacted the News and slammed the lack of organisation – noting that both the footpaths and road were clogged up with traffic.

He told the News: “With the Plaza car park and Olympia car park both having work done on them at the same time , it means there are not enough parking spaces and not enough space on the footpath.

“The whole car park of Rothesay Street is just a mess.

“I was there in the morning and you can no longer use the footpath because there are rows of cars.

“I would think that if I parked the way these workmen have that I would be given a ticket – I think someone should be challenging them.”

The multi-million pound work is coming into its final stages as it prepares to open before Christmas – after closing a year ago.

The new hub at the EK East Kilbride Shopping Centre has seen millions invested in creating the new facilities, which will include 11 new restaurants and cafes.

The work will also see the modernisation of the thoroughfare leading to EK’s new hub.

A spokesman for the East Kilbride Shopping Centre noted that the situation is “temporary” and comes as they enter the final stages of work on the new hub.

He said: “As the works programme nears completion at EK’s new leisure hub we are seeing increased levels of activity at the centre, which in turn is leading to an increased number of vehicles at Olympia.

“We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and reassure our customers that this is an exceptional and temporary situation as we look get our new leisure facilities open for business over the next few weeks.”
