Cancer survivor’s gift

- Mark Pirie

An East Kilbride cancer survivor handed over cheques for thousands of pounds to thank nurses for the treatment he received.

David Neary (31) was joined by wife Emma as they handed over cheques to Macmillan Cancer Support and The Beatson Cancer Charity following their fundraiser at the Torrance House Golf Course.

He presented the cheque along with wife Emma to the two representatives from the charities while he was at the Beatson for his check up ahead of his fifth year clear.

The ‘Five Years Clear’ fundraiser was a huge success — bringing in a grand total of £3871 which was split evenly between the two charities.

David was diagnosed with testicular cancer which had spread to his lymph glands at the age of just 25.

He underwent months of chemotherapy and surgery, and raised money to thank the staff who supported him during the difficult time.

The St Leonard’s man made the decision to raise money in honour of the staff for their support during his period of treatment, which also saw him plan his wedding day with Emma.

David jokes that the nurses almost acted as wedding planners, as his chemotherapy started exactly a year to the date before Emma and David were due to be married, after having been engaged for a number of years.

Following the presentation, David told the News: “Everyone was really pleased to see the outcome of the fundraiser, it was good to get the exposure for the two charities also.”
