Bus cut protestors vowing to fight on
Eaglesham residents fuming at route changes
The MP for Eaglesham has slammed the decision to cut buses in the town - and vowed to continue to fight the changes which came into effect last week.
The 4 and 4A First Bus Service to Glasgow, which travels to Glasgow city centre, will now only make one stop off in the village, following proposed changes to routes.
As of October 23 the only active bus stop for commuters in to Glasgow is on Strathaven Road, down from the three stops previously operating.
MP Kirsten Oswald wrote to First Bus urging them to change their plans after locals bombarded her with complaints, however she was unsuccessful.
The SNP MP told the News: “It is very disappointing that First bus have not listened to local residents and are continuing with their plans to cut bus services in Eaglesham.
“Many local people will be adversely affected by these cuts, and they will impact most on the elderly, those with disabilities, and those with small children.
“First Bus will hear more from local residents who have certainly not given up on this, and I am happy to stand with them. Our local communities need these bus services”.
A First Glasgow spokesman said that the changes had to be made to sustain any service to the village.
They also urged locals and MPs to get in touch to discuss the changes.
“First Glasgow has undertaken statutory consultation with stakeholders on this service change”, the spokesman told the News.
“We have had to make this alteration to the route to maintain the service to and from Eaglesham. Bus usage on the section of route in question has been poor for some time and this has a knock-on effect on the viability of the whole service unless economies can be made. “This stretch of route no longer being served existed as a drop-off point for services into Eaglesham and, by making this change, we can reduce costs and help to sustain our service to the community in Eaglesham.”
