40 YEARS AGO
Two young EK women had something more than the arrival of the New Year to celebrate when they showed off their Ne’erdayborn babies. Mrs Barbara Chrispin, from Westwood, gave birth to Nicholas James. She and her husband, Bill, also have a three-year-old son, Simon. Meanwhile, Louise Margaret was born to mum and dad, Rena and Hugh Taylor of Greenhills on New Year’s day.
East and West Mains were shaken by an explosion when a gas cylinder exploded in a hut in a wooded area behind Houston Terrace. The hut, thought to be used by local youths, was badly damaged and windows nearby were broken by the force of the blast.
30 YEARS AGO
Proposals which were set to provide EK with a first-class transport system including a new town centre railway station looked set to get the green light. This was revealed by Strathclyde Regional Council.
There was no shortage of Hogmanay cheer for off-licenses in the town who were delighted to report that business had been booming as local people prepared for New Year.
20 YEARS AGO
A rare and valuable piece of Beatles memorabilia – a framed photo of “The Pilllow Fight”which shot Lanarkshire photographer Harry Benson to world fame – vanished from the Village Theatre. The photo, taken in the early 1960s on the band’s first US tour, was part of an exhibition of Harry’s work.
East Kilbride stores recorded bumper sales following bonanza festive shopping sprees. Shops throughout the town were packed in the lead-up to Christmas and in the Boxing Day sales. The tills certainly jingled all the way.
