Scottish titlesfor Yamakai
Yamakai Karate Club enjoyed a medal-laden end to their season recently with some top performances at home and abroad.
At the Scottish Karate Championships in October Yamakai brought home three gold medals. Calum MacDonald won gold in the junior male kumite under 60 kilos, with the senior female team of Amy Luke, Emma Boyle and Roxy Gerelyuk also claiming first prize, taking gold along with the cadet male squad of Louis Galasso, Keir Fraser and Luke Miller.
Silver medals went to Matthew Miller, Keir Fraser and Amy MacDonald in the individual categories with both the boys under 5’ 4 and girls under 4’ 8 also taking silver awards. Bronze medals were won by Emma Boyle, Douglas Hay and Louis Galasso in their individual categories, with the girls under 5’ 0 team and the junior male squad also taking bronze.
Next up a squad of nine Yamakai fighters attended the Polish Open, which is fast becoming one of the biggest international open events on the calendar.
Yamakai returned with two medals, both won by Amy Luke. She took silver in the under-21 under 50 kilos section before going on to take bronze in the senior category. Amy put in some great dispalys on the day and this was rewarded with a place in the national squad.
The Wishaw Grand Prix followed for the club and Amy Luke was on form again, taking gold in the senior female kumite. Amy also won the overall female grand prix title for 2016.
There were also gold medals for Louis Galasso and Keir Fraser, with silver medal awards going to Keri Robertshaw, Iona MacDonald and Keir Fraser. Bronze awards were claimed by Matthew Miller and Michael Steel.
November also saw Yamakai fighters attend the Belgium International Open in Leuven, where Matthew Miller won silver in the junior male under 55 kilos kumite.
The final competition of the year took Yamakai members to Sunderland and gold went to Liam Carlin, with silver going to Leah Semple. Both boys’ 10-12 yrs team and cadet male B team also took silver, while Iona MacDonald and Keir Fraser took bronze in their individual categories. The cadet male A team also won bronze.
