Thieves left a trail of destructio­n after breaking into an East Kilbride primary school on Friday night.

Two men wearing hooded tops targeted Canberra Primary and made off with a large safe and small cash box.

The pair fled in a black Vauxhall Astra with stolen license plates and police are appealing for witnesses.

Two men wearing hooded tops were caught on CCTV forcing entry to the school playground shortly after 8.30pm on Friday.

They gained access to the building by smashing a large glass panel with a brick to get into the school office where they removed a fire extinguish­er from the hall to cause further damage and gain entry to the classrooms.

The suspects ransacked the school and made off with a small red cash box and a large safe; the contents of which have still to be confirmed.

They fled in a black Vauxhall Astra with stolen license plates with the registrati­on SA60 TOH. PC Laura Taylor said: “Cost-wise there was significan­t damage caused within the school.

“We are appealing for witnesses who saw anything suspicious in the area to come forward.”

The two male suspects wanted in connection with the break-in are described as white European, aged 18 to 25, 5ft 8in tall and of slim build.

The first man was wearing a grey hooded top and jogging bottoms and red trainers, while the second man wore navy hooded top with white stripes and long sleeves, black tracksuit bottoms and white trainers. Call 101 with informatio­n. Canberra head teacher Angela Heasman said: “This is the first time the new school has suffered a break-in and it is very dishearten­ing. We are working with the police and will use any CCTV images to help identify the intruders.”
