Kyle is on the road to glory
Period of success for ace Johnston
Calderwood cyclist Kyle Johnston is celebrating a hattrick of Time Trial wins.
And the 20-year-old was part of a top team which set a new Scottish record.
Johnston began the winning streak by securing victory in the Under-23s category at the Cycling Time Trials Scottish district championships at West Ferry, Langbank.
Cycling Time Trials is the national governing body for time trials in the UK – and this result was a good indicator for the upcoming Scottish Cycling National 10-mile championships in Freuchie, Fife.
Johnston finished first in a time of 21 minutes 37 seconds, picking up the Scottish Cycling National Under-23s title.
The following weekend, he competed in the much-anticipated Scottish National 25-mile Time Trial championships event in Forfar, Angus.
With a highly-competitive field and talk of records being broken, the race was highly charged despite the heavy traffic on the A90 and the challenging windy conditions.
There were over 90 riders in the field with Johnston finishing 20th overall in a credible time of 54 minutes 14 seconds.
His Pro Vision Scotland team-mate, and Scottish cycling phenomenon, John Archibald broke the existing Scottish record set by Graeme Obree in 1994 with a new time of 47 minutes and 57 seconds.
Johnston, along with Archibald and David Griffiths then went on to strike gold in the Scottish National 25-mile Team title event – setting a new Scottish Cycling record in the process.
The trio recorded a combined time of 2 hours 32 minutes and 23 seconds.
Talented Johnston – who was named East Kilbride’s male sports personality of the year in 2015 – rounded off a highly-successful spell of time-trialling by winning the John Davies 50-mile memorial road race in Kilmaurs, East Ayrshire.
