Medal magic forEKAC athletes
East Kilbride Athletics Club athletes have been in medal-winning form at the big early-season domestic championships.
Greg Kelly (Duncanrig Secondary) led the way with a gold medal in the 100m at the Scottish Schools championships at Grangemouth in a slightly wind-assisted time of 10.83 seconds.
He cruised to victory in his heat in 11.07 before coming out on top in a thrilling final where the top three athletes all clocked well under 11 seconds.
Hannah Anderson (Strathaven Academy) did well to dead heat for second in the under-15 girls’ 800m and was unlucky not to challenge for gold after a bump in a steadily run but closely contested race.
Her time was 2 minutes 21.55 seconds.
The West District championships in Kilmarnock were another happy hunting ground for Kelly, who recorded a windassisted time of 21.69 seconds – the fastest-ever recorded in an East Kilbride vest over the half lap – when winning the Under-20s 200m.
Greg also won the Under-20 100m in 11.22.
Other athletes doing well at the West included George McKenzie, who won the Under-13 boys’ 800m in a time of 2:24.84 while Liam Woods showed good form in the Under-15 boys’ sprints, finishing third in the 100m in 12.58 and second in the 200m in 25.12.
Ryan Clydesdale finished strongly to take a silver in the Under-17 men’s 400m in 51.95 and Hannah Anderson won bronze in the Under-15 girls’ 800m in 2:18.42.
