Title victory for Tammam
Ali takes 60kg lightweight belt
Westwood boxer Ali Tammam is celebrating after claiming the 60kg lightweight title at the Scottish Intermediate Boxing Championships last week.
The 20-year-old, who was competing for Priestfield Boxing Club in Blantyre, was in top form at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Centre in Motherwell as he cruised through to the final and beat Glen Brown of Kilsyth Golden Gloves to take the crown.
He was outstanding in his semi -final bout against Brett Cook (Edinburgh) with Ali giving Brett an eight count in the second round before the referee stopped the contest in Ali’s favour in the third round.
A testing opponent awaited in the gold medal match, but Ali boxed clever to see off Glen Brown by unanimous decision.
Tommy Slaven, Ali’s coach at Priestfield BC, was full of praise for his fighter.
He said: “Ali boxed terrific throughout the tournament and his hard work, focus and dedication in his training has been first class and it really paid off for him.
“I’m really pleased for him. He boxed well behind the jab, using a variety of punches and combinations.
“His opponent in the final was a really tough boy. He did well to come through and did so without losing a round.
“Ali has been with us for twoand-a-half years now and he is a great prospect with an abundance of talent.
“If he keeps up the same attitude and application he has been showing he has a bright future ahead of him, but it’s up to him to put the work in.”
Following his success, Ali will now begin preparing for a return to Ravenscraig next month, when he will compete at the Scottish Open.
